I think that the creators of Star Trek made a mistake when they created the universal translator. The idea of a universal translator bugs the hell out of me.
First, let's establish that I am not complaining about science. I know that there is almost no good science in Star Trek, and I am okay with that. I don't care how the universal translator would work. I am willing to accept that all of the technology in Star Trek runs on magic.
What bothers me is that, as a plot device, the universal translator gets rid of all linguistic issues without even addressing them. And linguistic issues are fascinating, and importa
