Some people don't understand why I am such a squealing fangirl over a character who ostensibly has no emotions, only mates every seven years, etc.  Well, here's why: 1. Spock is a good guy.  He always thinks about the greatest good for the greatest number.  He is always honest.  His loyalty to Kirk and to the Enterprise never wavers.  He is a pacifist.  He is even a vegetarian. 2. Spock is a genius.  He can do complex calculations in his head in seconds.  He usually figures out what's going on before anyone else does.  He has ridiculously complete and accurate bodies of knowledge about almost everything. 3. Dear anyone who cares, I think that the creators of Star Trek made a mistake when they created the universal translator.  The idea of a universal translator bugs the hell out of me. First, let's establish that I am not complaining about science.  I know that there is almost no good science in Star Trek, and I am okay with that.  I don't care how the universal translator would work.  I am willing to accept that all of the technology in Star Trek runs on magic. What bothers me is that, as a plot device, the universal translator gets rid of all linguistic issues without even addressing them.  And linguistic issues are fascinating, and importa
